Pink Flamingos
Pink Flamingos
Tens of thousands of flamingos live in the Yucatan peninsula year-round, but they change their breeding and nesting locations. The Celestun Biosphere Reserve is their favorite breeding ground, and Ria Lagartos near El Cuyo is great for nestling. You can also see pelicans, white herons, storks, and some crocodiles. The best time to observe large populations of flamingo in Celestun is from December to April. The season in Rio Lagartos runs from March through June. Also on El Cuyo there are 400 species of birds, some emblematic as the Yucatecan “Matraca,” Yucatecan “Perlita,” Mexican “Tijereta Hummingbird,” Yucatecan “Piranga,” among others along with a great diversity of habitats make this site ideal for nature lovers and bird watching.
